Punjab - the land of five rivers - lies in North West India. In the Vedic Era, Punjab was called ‘Sapat Sindu’. Sapat Sindu means the land of seven rivers - the Sindu, Jehlum, Ravi, Chenab, Beas, Satluj and Yamuna. The Mughals persianised its name by calling it ‘Panj – Aab’ or -the land of five rivers- excluding Sindhu and Yamuna. Punj means five and aab means water, so Punjab means -the land of five rivers-.









Punjab is the most developed, most populous, and most prosperous province of Pakistan.[5][6] Lahorehas been the capital of Punjab for a thousand years; it is Punjab's main cultural, historical, administrative and economic center.[7] Punjab has been the gateway of the Indian subcontinent for the invaders from GreeceCentral AsiaIran and Afghanistan.[8]Due to its stategic location, Punjab has been part of various empires and dynasties throughout history, including the Indus Valley CivilizationAryans,KushansScythiansPersiansArabsTurks,GhaznavidsTimuridsMughalsAfghansSikhs and the British.
The Greeks referred to Punjab as Pentapotamia, an inland delta of five converging rivers.[9] In Avesta, the sacred text of Zoroastrians, the Punjab region is associated with the ancient hapta hÉ™ndu or Sapta Sindhu, the Land of Seven Rivers.[10] The British used to call Punjab "Our Prussia."
